The Big Idea – Connections Multiply Impact

Big Idea

Compound probability shows the chance of two or more events happening together. In real life, some communities face overlapping challenges—like low income and poor health, or lack of internet and fewer schools. These combined inequities make opportunities harder to reach. God calls us to care for those who face many struggles.

Math + Faith Example

In a community of 1,000 families:

  • 30% lack affordable housing → Probability = 0.30
  • 20% lack access to healthcare → Probability = 0.20
  • Families facing both = 0.30 × 0.20 = 0.06 (6%)

About 60 families face both challenges at the same time. Compound probability helps us see how struggles overlap.

Scripture Connections

  • Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (KJV): “Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.”
  • Isaiah 1:17 (KJV): “Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.”
