The Big Idea – Living in Right Proportion

The Big Idea – Living in Right Proportion

Big Idea

Proportions compare parts to the whole. In many places, neighborhoods with more people of color face higher proportions of pollution. God calls us to protect creation and care for the people most affected.

Math + Faith Example

A city has two neighborhoods:

  • Neighborhood A (wealthier): 200 homes, 20 near factories → 20/200 = 1/10 (10%)
  • Neighborhood B (low-income): 200 homes, 80 near factories → 80/200 = 4/10 (40%)

Neighborhood B has a much higher proportion of families exposed to pollution. Proportions show us where injustice exists.

Scripture Connections

  • Genesis 2:15 (KJV): “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”
  • Proverbs 31:8 (KJV): “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.”
